Frequently Asked Questions
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — just to keep you alive. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is your total calorie burn including all physical activity. TDEE = BMR multiplied by an activity factor. TDEE is the number you use for setting calorie targets.
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation (used in this calculator) is considered the most accurate for most people, with studies showing it predicts RMR within 10% for 82% of individuals. The older Harris-Benedict formula tends to overestimate. For athletes with high muscle mass, the Katch-McArdle formula (which uses lean body mass) can be more precise.
