According to the World Health Organization, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a healthy weight for adults. Under 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classified as obese. These ranges apply to adults aged 20 and over.
BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. In imperial units: BMI = (weight in pounds times 703) divided by height in inches squared. For example, a person weighing 70 kg at 1.75 m has BMI = 70 divided by 3.0625 = 22.9, which is in the normal range.
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. A muscular athlete may show high BMI but low body fat. Older adults may show normal BMI but high body fat due to muscle loss. BMI also does not account for fat distribution, age, sex, or ethnicity. Use it as one of several health indicators.
