Frequently Asked Questions
On the US 4.0 scale, a GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good. A 3.5 or above is considered excellent and competitive for graduate school or honors programs. Below 2.0 is typically the minimum to remain in good academic standing at most universities.
GPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credit Hours) divided by Total Credit Hours. For example: an A in a 3-credit course (4.0 x 3 = 12 points) plus a B in a 4-credit course (3.0 x 4 = 12 points) = 24 total points divided by 7 total credits = 3.43 GPA.
Semester GPA measures only the courses taken in a single term. Cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all semesters combined, and is the figure most employers and graduate schools review. A strong final semester does not fully offset a weak cumulative GPA.
