Tip Calculator

In the United States, the standard restaurant tip is 15 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill. Fifteen percent is the minimum for adequate service, 18 to 20 percent is considered standard, and 20 percent or more is appropriate for excellent service. For takeout orders, 10 percent is customary.

For a 20% tip: move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $46 bill: 10% = $4.60, doubled = $9.20 for a 20% tip. For 15%: find 10% and add half of that: $4.60 + $2.30 = $6.90.
